Long Island Creek Site 2A

Stream Characteristics

Overview

Long Island Creek Site A is a small stream surrounded by a large amount of brush with a few trees. The elevation is very steep downhill, and made the site difficult to get to. Once down to the stream bed the elevation leveled out. The measurements of the stream were taken on the first day to the site. The measurements were taken from the top of the stream bank across and then down to the floor of the stream. This gave the complete area to the stream. The students also measured the water discharge every visit.

Physical Measurements

The section of the channel that group two measured has a width of 20 feet from bank to bank and a water depth of 1.2 inches on average. Severe incising of the stream is occurring due to storm event run-off flowing into the stream.

In-Stream Characteristics

The site is composed of mostly riffles with a few very small sections of runs. There were also pools that were carved into the bank. There is a pipe that goes along the stream that helps keep the runs moving. The floor of the stream is very rocky, which added to a low water level, creates the riffles. There were small amounts of brown algae coating the rocks. The end of the site runs into a culvert that continues beneath the road and into Long Island Creek Site B.
